I Believe I Can Fly (Poem by Mark Swift)

I have no idea what the song is called, but this is inspired from a song that has the lyrics, "I believe I can fly." It's a very popular song, and I bet you have heard it, but point being, inspiration is not mine.
---------------------------------------------
I believe I can fly,
The clouds would be beneath,
And the sun within my reach.
Among the birds of the sky,
I will soar through the air.
I believe I can fly,
Without the fear of falling,
Without flailing my limbs.
The beasts below are out of reach,
And the worries of the earth vanish.
I believe I can fly.

  1. Wow! So good. It's so peaceful and triumphant. Keep writing! my favorite lines are
    "Without the fear of falling,
    Without flailing my limbs.
The beasts below are out of reach,
And the worries of the earth vanish.
    I believe I can fly."
One edit, though. You switched to italics in the "without flailing my limbs"line.
This applies to all of my Snake Squadron characters! (especially Mark)

    1. The italics are purposeful. Whoever can figure out why I italicised them first gets a miniature shoutout! :D

    2. I can't recognize it. Is it a quote of a song, a interview, or movie?

    3. Nope, nope, nope :D
And not a quote, either. Hint: it uses one of my favorite literary devices

    4. What's ironic is how you know me so well and yet couldn't be farther from the truth -sigh-

    5. Wait, is it an actual literary technique? Or one that isn't "real"?

    6. Hi Mark. Your poem is really pretty and uplifting. As well, I like the song too. Its a 90's song, so of course I would like it. And are you trying to put emphasis on the verse that uses italics?

    7. Yes, Kyra, I'm foreshadowing a future flight.

    8. Yes? Oh yeah! You love foreshadowing! I can't believe I forgot *facepalms*

    9. Sarcastic. I love foreshadowing, yes, but it's not my favorite technique

  2. I believe I can fly
I believe I can touch the sky
I think about it every night and day
Just spread my wings and fly away

You knew it was going to happen.

  3. This is so pretty, first off, that picture is beautiful (probably just a stock) but I had to say that it was amazing. XD Second of all, the poem is amazing. It has a sense of hope, like its possible to fly, possible to do anything you want to, and if you believe you can, theres a good chance you can. I love this, great job! :)

  4. This is a very nice poem, and it is pretty inspiring. However, the song, "I Believe I Can Fly" is now stuck in my head thanks to you. Lol. Also, do the italics in the poem indicate thought? Just a guess, since I do that here and there. I really enjoyed reading this poem, though. Awesome work, as always, Mark.

    1. Lol Your welcome XD
They invoke thought as to what they mean, but they don't indicate it directly; it's a specific literary device I used to emphasize certain lines. Idk if any of you will guess it, Kyra should be able to but she hasn't
Thanks, glad you like it :D

    2. I think the italics might represent... personification? I don't know. I'm most likely wrong, but after all it was a guess. If it's not that, I'm at a loss on what the literary device is. Lol.

    3. Not personification, no, although that's a good guess. It's actually irony. I'm scared of heights, so flying would be terrifying for me, and yet the italics indicate that it's a sanctuary, a place I can go without fear -shrug-

    4. Oh, that makes more sense. That's actually pretty clever when given the context. I would have never expected it to be irony! Lol. Thanks for clarifying.

    5. Yes it is, and it's also obvious if you actually know me, and Kyra couldn't get it, even when she knows how much I hate heights :P

    6. Plus, as I told her, the italics were signalling where I was using my favorite literary device :D Everyone who talks to be enough realizes I use irony a lot. "'We aren't fictional characters, Dave!' Joe told him." Perfect example of what I love doing in every single story XD
