The Quiet (Poem by Mark Swift)

The quiet still lies,
Hides horrors beneath shrouds.
Its touch can be kind,
But beware the lethal flower.

  1. Okay I really really loved this one... The appearance of something so perfect and beautiful has the darkest secrets and the deepest inside. Idk, this one really just came across as "wow" for me, I picture like a Venus fly trap or something, but understand the meaning is deeper than a fly eating plant, great job!

  2. This is amazing. And there is a reason silence is deafening is such an accurate saying.

    1. Yep. People are always talking about how friendly silence is, but I decided to share how it affects some people, like me...

    2. I don't think silence is friendly. I think it's suffocating and unwelcome in places it forces itself into, sometimes impossible to get rid of.

    3. Ah, okay lol. Still, I wasn't talking about you, I was talking about the world as a whole

    4. I know, I was just giving my opinion on silence, sorry if it wasn't wanted.

    5. Oh lol No, I enjoy other opinions, I just misunderstood you XD Not surprising since the last time I got a full night's sleep was about a week ago

    6. Well, not really, no. Like I hinted at, I've been having nightmares

    7. ...misunderstanding again XD I'll send it via NaNo Mail in a bit, if I can figure out a decent password. It's pretty personal, so I don't want it open to the public :/

  3. It's amazing and all, but... is the flower a hyacinth? :)

    1. Well, it's not really anything :P Just a flower

    2. I supposed it could be? I just thought "flower" as in it appears good, and then lethal to show that it really isn't good. I didn't actually choose any particular sort of flower

    3. Oh well. I have decided I will think of it as a hyacinth.

  5. Wow, I really love this poem, Mark. I can find myself relating to it, since I'm pretty quiet around those I don't know well, and am therefore silent. I can feel the uncomfortable aspects, especially the dread of "Should I say anything else?" It's an indecisive thing for me. This poem, though, actually reminded me of "Silence-A Fable," a short story by Edgar Allan Poe about silence being horrifying, and I can see this type of aspect in your poem. Silence, overall, can be uncomfortable, it can be friendly, or it can be depressing. Your poem reminds me of the uncomfortable silence I have. Anyway, this was a fantastic poem with great detail, though brief, that packs the punch from the effects of what silence can do.

    1. Thanks!
...although, I find Edgar Allan Poe to be a bit dark...hmm...I should write more optimistic poetry :P

    2. Oh! I don't think this poem is dark. I find it rather realistic, since this is something that a lot of people go through on both ends, the one receiving silence, and the one giving it. I compared it to Edgar Allan Poe, since the theme in that story is about how we can endure through the loudness, the noise, but silence is the aspect that can be uncomfortable.
