MCU Rewatch: Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)

Forenote: I watched this on Halloween night, and I wrote the article right after, so I thankfully didn't put aside any NaNoWriMo time for this! Hope you enjoy it! (...and I just realized, Endgame is going to be a SUPER fun one to write...)

So, lately, my family has started rewatching every movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). While I'm uncertain if this is going to be a trend, I know I'm for sure hooked on rewatching every MCU movie before Black Widow's release in May 2020. Bear in mind, further content will have spoilers!

"What makes you so special?"
"Nothing. I'm just a kid from Brooklyn."
-Red Skull and Steve Rogers, Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)

The First Avenger is a fantastic film. It's set in 1943, which makes it the first MCU film chronologically. But, like with all great things, we go in the release order, not the chronological order, right?

The First Avenger starts off with a German named Johann Schmidt invading a church in Norway, seeking something called a Tesseract. He manages to find its hiding place against the odds, showing excellent observation skills. Then he kills the church keeper.

It's about a year later when the next scene takes place. Steve Rogers, a skinny kid, is rejected into the military. He asks the man if there's anything that can be done, and the man replies with, "Yeah, I'm doing it. I'm saving your life." Rogers then goes to see a cartoon, which has a rather long war recruitment message at the beginning. He eventually loses patience with a heckler and forcefully tells him to show some respect to his country. The scene then moves forward to the heckler beating Rogers up in an alley. Rogers' best friend, Bucky Barnes, comes to save the day, and then he invites Rogers to go on a double-date at Stark Expo. It turns out to hardly be a double-date, as Rogers' date chooses to ignore him entirely. Rogers then attempts again to enlist in the military, but he's in for a surprise.

Doctor Abraham Erskine approaches Rogers and offers a chance. Rogers is then drafted into the military, and despite failing at several aspects of training, tells Colonel Chester Philips that Rogers is perfect for his plan. Philips initially disagrees, but after Rogers throws himself on top of a dummy grenade to protect his fellow soldiers (thinking it was a real grenade), the colonel reluctantly allows Erskine to choose Rogers, still complaining about how skinny Rogers was even if he was forced to admit the young man had guts.

Erskine then proceeds to inject Rogers with the serum. Then, a German spy plants an explosive in the building, shoots Erskine, and flees. Rogers chases after, eventually capturing the man. This leads to a lot of media attention, which forces Philips to use Rogers at least to boost morale, if nothing more. Rogers is then sent overseas, where he becomes an actor. Rogers finally encounters a rough crowd that jeers at him. Peggy Carter, who's been making minor appearances before now, tells Rogers that those men were the 107th survivors, and that the rest of the company was either captured or killed. Rogers is suddenly alarmed, and realizing Bucky Barnes is in the 107th, and he hasn't seen his best friend yet.

Rogers then assaults the nearby Hydra base and frees all the prisoners, including Bucky Barnes, who comments about how he remembered Rogers being smaller. Before they can escape, they witness Schmidt removing his full-face mask, which reveals that he's not any ordinary human anymore. His identity is revealed as the Red Skull. Both teams escape from the exploding base, and Rogers leads his men back to camp. Rogers approaches some of the men and makes them members of his personal squadron. Then he goes and selects a shield from Howard Stark. The shield is circular, and made of pure vibranium. It's the shield we all associate with Captain America today.

Rogers leads a few more assaults, and in his latest, Bucky Barnes is lost, falling off the mountain and into the snow far below. Rogers then leads a daring final assault on the last Hydra base. He's captured and confronted by the Red Skull, but then his fellow soldiers break in and provide a chance for him to break free of the guards. Rogers then chases the Red Skull and sneaks aboard the Valkyrie, Red Skull's plane, which is loaded with plenty of bombs, and ready to wipe out the entire United States. Rogers presses his assault into the cockpit, where he has his final showdown with Red Skull.

The two face off, and eventually, it becomes evident Rogers is the better man. Red Skull grabs the Tesseract and tries to use its power against Rogers, but the power seems to consume him. Red Skull vanishes and the Tesseract burns a hole in the plane and falls into the ocean. Rogers then goes to the controls for the Valkyrie and realizes the only way to stop it is to steer it into the ocean, which he does.

Then, nearly 70 years later, Rogers is found and thawed out of the ice. He wakes up in a 1940s room. The radio broadcasts a baseball game, and someone enters. Rogers asks where he really is, and tells the lady that he was there at that very game. He escapes the room, flees the building, and escapes to a square, where he takes in his surroundings. Nick Fury then approaches and explains the whole situation, and asks Rogers if he's alright. Rogers responds with, "I had a date."

End Credits Scene: Rogers demolishes a punching bag, which probably isn't the first one. Nick Fury enters and makes an attempt at small talk. Rogers asks Fury if he's trying to get him back in the world, and Fury responds with, "Trying to save it."

Avengers (2012) Trailer: Immediately following the end credits scene, the Avengers (2012) trailer plays.
